Territorians on the Road Part 1!

16 Sep 2014 , by PMeade

As part of Cycling NT's commitment to provide support to fellow Territorians. We catch up with Ryan who has been competing around Australia and doing the Territory proud.

Name and location of the event competed in?

UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) Qualifier in Perth between March 28th - 30th.
20km Time Trial: 1st place in 19 - 34 year category (4th overall)
98km Road Race: 4th place in 19 - 34 year old category (4th overall)

What your goals were prior to the event and what they are now?

My main goal was to qualify for the Australian team to compete in the Amateur World Championships. I focussed primarily on the time trial which I wanted to finish in the top 3. The road race had a looped course with continuous hills. This was difficult to train for with the terrain in Alice Springs, so I wanted to finish high enough in the classifications to make the Australian team selection.

Now that I qualified, my main goal is to be competitive in the TT. I have power output goals I would like to achieve which should give me an average of +47km/hr on the TT course. I'd also like to finish with the peloton in the road race which means that I need to make it over the 2 significant climbs in the race!

Anything else inspirational or moments of brilliance that you would like to share?

Although I am naturally a self disciplined and motivated athlete always wanting to push myself to the next level, I draw a lot of motivation from my family. My pregnant wife and two kids are as committed as I am leading up to the World Championships - even when it means they won't see me all afternoon, they will push me out of the house if needed to ensure I get in my training ride! Its always nice to hear my 2 and a half year old daughter yell out "Go Daddy, GO!!!" when she comes to watch me race and my 9 year old son brag to his friends that his dad is a "World Champion...". No matter how many times I tell him how fast the other international riders are he keeps telling me that I'll beat them - I've got big shoes to fill in Slovenia!

Cycling NT wishes Ryan all the best and will bring you his story from Slovenia very shortly.
